Kodak DC290

Ron Eggers, June, 2000

Sophisticated Capabilities at a Competitive Price

The Kodak DC290 is a well-designed digital camera that's comfortable to use, easy to operate, and delivers some excellent images. It's small enough to carry anywhere, but sufficiently sophisticated to meet the needs of most consumer and business applications.

Some digital cameras are so quiet, that it can be difficult to determine when pictures are taken or if commands that you input are accepted. The DC290 solves this problem by offering auditory feedback which simulates the clicks and shutter action of conventional film cameras. The sounds can be turned off if so desired.

The camera has a 2.1-megapixel CCD with a true resolution of 1792x1200 pixels, which can be interpolated to 2240x1500 pixels in the camera. There are four capture settings: good, better, best and uncompressed. While image quality is a little better in the "uncompressed" mode, the "best" mode offers the optimum combination of high image quality and maximum storage capacity

The DC290 features an optical zoom range equivalent to 38-115mm in the 35mm format, with maximum f-stops from f/3 in the wide-angle position to f/4.7 at the telephoto setting. There's also a 2X digital zoom for even greater magnification. The minimum focusing distance is 12 inches. The camera offers both automatic and manual exposure modes, and features exposure compensation of ±2 stops, in 1/2-stop increments.

The Kodak DC290 is a compact, full-featured 2.1-megapixel digital camera that offers a variety of helpful features, including a unique auditory feedback system. The camera also has a "burst" mode that captures up to four sequential pictures at high resolution, and up to 16 pictures at standard resolution.
The camera also lets you set white balance and focus manually, if you so desire, and features a multi-mode electronic flash. Pictures can be taken one at a time, or in a special "burst" mode that enables you to shoot 4-16 frames consecutively, depending upon capture resolution. Available shutter speeds range from 1/360 to 16 seconds.

The unit has a 2-inch color LCD on the back for image review and preview, as well as a small monochrome LCD that displays most camera settings.

The camera's "menu" option accesses the Digita O/S operating environment—a complete digital camera operating system. Options include "Picture Type," "Album," "White Balance," "Watermark," "Advanced Exposure Modes," "Preferences," and "Scripts." A mode dial on the camera back is used to navigate around the menu options, and the procedure is quite straightforward. Each item has a number of alternative settings. The "Picture Type" menu, for example, lets you select either the still-image mode, the burst mode or a time-lapse mode. The "Album" menu makes it easy to organize and manage images in individual groups, while the "Advanced Exposure Modes" menu delineates exposure and flash settings.
