The DC5000 has multiple image-capture modes, including full-color, black-and-white, sepia and a special "document" setting for copying printed materials. The camera can be used in a fully automatic shooting mode, but also offers numerous manual overrides, including exposure compensation of ± 2 stops in half-stop increments. There's also a choice of three image-quality settings.

The automatic ISO 100 setting can be turned off when shooting in low light without the use of flash. White balance can also be set on automatic, or it can be controlled manually for daylight, tungsten and fluorescent lighting conditions.

The camera offers a choice of two metering modes; the common center-weighted metering, as well as multi-pattern metering. All shooting options are accessed by pressing a menu button while the mode dial is set to "capture."

The DC5000 has a 2.1-megapixel CCD and features a very sharp f/5.6-f/13 optical zoom lens equivalent to 30-60mm in the 35mm format. For added versatility, the camera also offers 3X digital zoom capability. The built-in multi-mode flash has a range of 9.8 feet.
In Use
Shooting with the DC5000 is fun, thanks in part to its solid feel and oversized controls,. The only problem we encountered was when we attempted to shoot multiple frames in rapid succession. In this instance, some images were lost when shooting rapidly because of the lengthy time lag between when an image was captured and the camera was ready to shoot again.

After switching the mode dial to "review," it's possible to view individual images alone, or see a selection of scrolling thumbnails. The menu makes it possible to zoom in on an image to view it, mark it for print out on Kodak picture kiosks and run a slide show directly from the camera.

Images can be also displayed on a TV in a slide show format, with adjustable display times. The camera can be set for either the North American NTSC or European PAL video standards. The camera can be connected to either Windows-based PCs or Macs through the USB port. Conventional serial image file format transfer is also supported. Since the DC5000 uses CompactFlash cards, the easiest way to access your images is by using a card reader. The DC5000 accepts firmware upgrades, which will enable you to enhance its functionality in the future. It ships with an 8 MB CompactFlash card, four AA batteries, the appropriate cabling and straps, for a suggested retail price of $699.
