The external LCD panel atop the camera shows everything applicable to the current camera status: remote control, shutter speed, ISO speed, metering mode, Custom Function number, active AF points, battery status, film status, exposure status, aperture, multiple-exposure number, beeper status, ambient and flash exposure compensation, frame number, self-timer operation, etc. Only the applicable items are displayed at any one time; the panel is easy to read and not at all confusing.

Like all EOS cameras, the Elan 7 can use all of the excellent EOS lenses, which currently number more than 50, from a 14mm f/2.8 superwide-angle and a 15mm f/2.8 full-frame fisheye to a monstrous 1200mm f/5.6 supertelephoto, including soft-focus, true macro and tilt-shift lenses, and more than 20 zooms from a 17-35mm f/2.8 to a 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6.

Accessories include the aforementioned lenses and flash units, the Battery Pack BP-300 (which provides a comfortable vertical grip with shutter and AE-lock buttons, and accepts four AA batteries or two CR123A lithium batteries), the Remote Switch RS-60E3 (a 2-foot cable release) and Remote Controller RC-1 (a wireless infrared remote that works at distances up to 16.4 feet), a semi-hard camera case, and a handy Anti-Fog Eyepiece Ed, which resists condensation in cold or humid weather.

Custom Functions
Thirteen Custom Functions are built into the Elan 7, providing 34 different settings that allow you to tailor the camera to your preferences. The functions allow you to do such things as leave the film leader out after rewind (C.Fn-2), change the functions of the shutter and AE-lock button (C.Fn-4), set first or second-curtain flash sync (C.Fn-6), and disable or enable in-focus focusing-point flashing (C.Fn-10). The Custom Functions are easy to use. Just rotate the Command Dial to C.Fn, rotate the Main Dial to select the Custom Function number, then press the C.Fn button to select the desired option for that function. You can use the same process to de-select a Custom Function.

In Use
The EOS Elan 7e was a lot of fun to use. It's light and solid, and with its metallic top and front covers and high-tech plastic body shell with rubberized gripping surfaces, feels great in the hands. All controls are easy to find and operate, and mostly self-explanatory.

Eye Controlled Focus is a delight. Just look at the AF point you want to activate, and the camera uses it to focus. You don't have to fumble for buttons if you suddenly want to change to a different point while shooting (although the focusing-point buttons on the camera back are easily located with the camera at your eye).

Our test images on color slide films were sharp and properly exposed—indoors and out, in bright light and dim, by ambient light and with flash. This camera has the performance, features and feel to satisfy serious photographers, at a very competitive price.
