Our pre-production MZ-S camera body came with a production version of the new SMCP-FA Macro 200mm f/4 ED[IF] lens, which focuses down to 1.69 feet, close enough to provide a life-size image of a subject on the film. One advantage of a longer-focal-length macro lens is the greater working distance (11 inches at 1:1 with this new Pentax lens), which provides more room for lighting gear, and keeps you from scaring off skittish subjects such as insects.

Specs on the new lens include 12 elements (including two of extra-low dispersion ED glass plus a high-refraction element) in 9 groups, a 12.5° angle of view, a minimum aperture of f/32, a filter size of 67mm, a diameter of 2.9 inches, a length of 7.5 inches and a weight of 38.2 ounces.

Other features include Pentax's famed Ghostless Coating for sharp, high-contrast images with minimal flare and ghosting; inner focusing for lighter weight, quicker focusing and brighter image edges at close range; easy switching between auto and manual focusing modes merely by sliding the focusing ring (forward for AF, back for MF); a focus limiter so the lens doesn't have to hunt through its full focusing range when you're shooting close-ups; a rotating tripod mount (with click-stops every 90°) so you can quickly and easily switch between horizontal- and vertical-format shooting without detaching the camera; and attractive silver-and-black design; and a lens hood with a window for adjusting a polarizing filter.
