I also did extensive software manipulation on these shots (#4, #5,and #6). Using techniques like customized color conversion to specific grayscale values and burning and dodging I did exactly what well-known black and white photographers have done since the beginning of photography, except now we can see exactly what we are doing on the monitor. In the past, of course, the results couldn’t be seen until the print was developed.
You can also make changes in very specific areas of the image; these are called “local” changes versus “global” changes, which affect the entire image. In this way you have infinitely more control over your images than Ansel Adams ever had. I worked on the sky separate from the ground in this shot using “local” contrast controls (#7).
